Joseph Keys Jr. was born on 5 Apr 1769 in North Carolina, the son of
Joseph Keys and Rebecca Mullan. He died October 6, 1854 in White River
MM, Randolph Co., Indiana. Joseph was a birthright Quaker.
Joseph married Mary Piggott on 12 Sep 1793 in Cane Creek MM, Surry Co.,
NC. Mary Piggott was born 9 Apr 1767, in Orange County North Carolina,
the daughter of Benjamin Piggott and Mary Hadley. She died 17 Feb 1820
in Deep Creek MM, Surry (now Yadkin) County, North Carolina. Mary was a
birthright Quaker.
The following children were born to this marriage: Ruth, b. 10 Oct 1794;
Rebecca, b. 14 Dec 1795; Benjamin, b. 4 Oct 1797; John, b. 18 Oct 1799;
Mary, b. 2 Aug 1801; Joseph, Jr., b. 14 (or 11) Dec 1803; Elizabeth, b.
13 Feb 1806; and Hannah b. 15 Jun 1808.
Following the death of his first wife, Mary, Joseph married Ruth Hadley
Marshele in 1821 in Deep Creek MM Surry Co., NC. Ruth Hadley Marshele
the second wife of Joseph Keys, was the daughter of Simon Hadley and
Bridget Foote and was born May 11, 1770. She died May 15, 1852. She was
the widow of Joseph Marshele.
Following the death of Ruth, May 18, 1852, Joseph Keys requested
membership to the White River MM in Randolph County, Indiana. Membership
was granted and he moved from North Carolina to Randolph County, Indiana
to live out his remaining years with his children, most of whom had
previously migrated to Randolph County.
Mary is buried in the Deep Creek Friends cemetery. Her gravestone is
still standing and inscribed; Mary Keys, D 17 2 Mo, 1820. (Some records
note her death as February 2, 1820 however the Keys Family bible record
confirms February 17).
