Whereas, Joseph Keys, son of Joseph and Rebecca Keys of Surry Co., in
the state of North Caroline, and Mary Piggott, daughter of Benjamin and
Mary Piggott of Orange County and state aforesaid, having declared their
intentions of marriage with each other before several monthly meetings
of the people called Quakers at Cane Creek in Orange Co., aforesaid, and
according to the good order used amongst them they having consent of
parents and relations concerning their s’d proposals of marriage were
allowed by s’d meetings. Now these may certify whom it may concern,
that for the full accomplishing of their s’d intentions this 12th day
of the 9th month 1793 they the s’d Joseph Keys and Mary Piggott
appeared in a public meeting of the s’d people at Cane Creek above
said and the s’d Joseph Keys taking the s’d Mary Piggott by the hand
did in solemn manner openly declare that he took her the s’d Mary
Piggott to be his wife promising with divine assistance to be unto her a
loving and faithful husband until death should separate them or words to
that effect and then and there in the same assembly, she the s’d Mary
Piggott did in like manner openly declare that she took him the s’d
Joseph Keys to be her husband, promising with divine assistance to be
unto him a loving and faithful wife until death should separate them or
words to that purpose and moreover the s’d Joseph Keys and Mary
Piggott she according to the custom of marriage assuming the name of her
husband as a further confirmation thereof did then and there to these
presents set their hands and we whose names are underneath subscribed
being present at the consummation thereof do, as witnesses hereunto
subscribe our names the day and year above written.
