The Kansas Burnhams
Robert Elam Burnham and Ann Emma Green
(We are working on Green research with other cousins at this time)

Robert Elam Burnham was born November 2, 1827 at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England, the son of George Burnham and Ann Elam. As a young man he immigrated to the United States, coming to Ohio in 1850. On August 19, 1854 he married Anna Emma Green in Monroeville, Huron County, Ohio. Reverend Turner performed the service.

In 1864 they lived in Groveport, Ohio and on May 2, 1864, at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, he enlisted in Co. K, 133 Ohio Infantry and on May 6, 1864 mustered into service from Camp Chase, Ohio. He served as the post baker. During the Civil War men enlisted in the Union Army serving in their local Infantry units for the required period of ninety days. On August 20, 1864 Robert Burnham mustered out of service at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. In his Declaration for Pension, dated August 9, 1913 it states that he also served "as a private of Captain Kile's (G) Company, 3rd Reg't Battalion 'Ohio National Guard', having joined the said organization July 15th, 1863 and serving five years"

In 1869 He moved his family to Kansas settling in Waterloo Twp., Lyon County, Kansas. The U. S. Census for 1870 shows his age as 42 and his occupation as Farmer. He continued to farm and the Kansas State Census for 1885 shows his farm located in Ivy Twp., Lyon County, Kansas. A copy of that census is printed in this section.

He continued to reside at Ivy Twp. in Lyon County until some time between 1900 and 1907 when his Pension application shows an address of Reading, Lyon County, Kansas. Pension correspondence indicates that by 1913 he was residing in Nickerson, Reno Co., Kansas, most probably at the home of his daughter. Robert Elam Burnham died on May 26, 1916 in Nickerson, Reno County, Kansas at the age of 88 years, 6 months, and 19 days. From statements made on his application for pension, it would appear that he was ill with lung problems and, in his own words, "I am weak & feeble, give out easily, I am short of breath."

Anna Emma Green was born at March Cambridgeshire, England, February 2nd, 1831, the daughter of William Green and Elisabeth Isaacson and the granddaughter of Abraham Green and Elizabeth Jones. She was baptized on 13 February 1831 at St. Wendreda Church, March, Cambridgeshire, England. Ann came to America between 1850 and 1852 (correct date still to be confirmed) and located in Monroeville, Ohio where she married Robert Elam Burnham. She died at Ivy Twp., Lyon County, Kansas on August 2, 1908 at the age of 77 years, 6 months.
